ABOUT US
ALLAN CORFIELD STRUCTURES
Allan Corfield Structures (ACS) was initially established in early 2021 to provide structural engineering services to Allan Corfield Architects (ACA) clients. Led by our Technical Director, Chartered Structural Engineer and SER Certifier David Gallagher, ACS now offers a market-leading service for both ACA & external clients, inc a number of top Architects & MMC kit suppliers.
Since its inception, ACS has secured over 70 projects, and the team has grown to 9. We provide value from the early design stages by working closely with our clients and designers rather than as a traditional reactive engineering service. Our vast experience in Timber frame, SIPS, and ICF means that ACS are the right choice for your project.

David Gallagher
Technical Director & Structural Engineer

David attained an MEng in Civil Engineering Design and Management at Dundee University in 2006. During his career, he has obtained a wealth of experience working in the UK, Middle East and New Zealand working on a number of high profile projects before joining AC Structures as Technical Director.
David has recently undertaken his own self-build house extension where he lives with his wife Rachel and two boys Seamus and Douglas. David enjoys travelling, running and football.
Susan Anderson
Senior Structural Engineer

Susan obtained a BEng in Civil Engineering from Edinburgh University, then embarked upon a career taking in everything from tunnelling and harbour design, to schools and warehouses, before specialising in residential work, both in new build and alterations.
She has extensive experience in timber, steel, masonry and reinforced concrete design and particularly enjoys site work and problem-solving site issues.
Susan joined ACS from Woolgar Hunter, where she was the main point of contact for house builder clients, along with working on refurbishment and conversion projects.
Away from the office, Susan is a keen quizzer and thinks her partner should let her get a cat.
Richard Holt
Senior Structural Technician

Richard is an experienced Structural Engineering Technician with experience across all major types of construction methods, from buildings in concrete, steel and timber through to highways and site investigations.
At ACS, Richard is our lead Structural Technician. He is responsible for guiding our drawing standards, undertaking detailed drawings, helping guide our graduates in best practices for drawings (and providing home baking to the office on occasion.)
Starting his engineering career as an apprentice, Richard is close to completing a BEng in Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt as a part-time student, in addition to his BA (Hons) in Sports Science.
Richard is proud to be the only former professional sportsman on the team, having previously been a PGA golfer, and still plays when his wife and family commitments allow.
Michael Cairnie
Project Structural Engineer

Michael graduated from Heriot-Watt University in 2017 with an MEng in Structural Engineering with Architectural Design and recently joined AC Structures as a Project Structural Engineer.
He has spent the last five years developing as an engineer at a consultancy in Edinburgh, working in various sectors. He brings experience in leading a wide range of projects, from house alterations to commercial showrooms across the country and using a diverse range of structural materials.
He is currently working towards gaining Chartered Engineer status with the IStructE. Michael has joined the AC Structures team to get involved in the exciting projects we are working on and to provide future clients with innovative and sustainable design solutions.
Away from work, Michael spends his time getting involved in sports such as football, golf and snowboarding. He enjoys long walks with his dog Milo and travelling.
Paul Chambers
Structural Design Engineer

Paul graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with his MEng in Civil Engineering in 2022. Focusing the final two years of his studies on the sustainability of recycled timber, he was able to have a paper published regarding the analysis of recycled timber within CLT. After finishing university, he was keen to find a hands-on role in structural engineering.
After a short time spent travelling in Southeast Asia, Paul joined the team at ACS in the second half of 2022, where he began the next stage of his engineering journey. Working towards a chartership with the IStructE under the guidance of his senior engineers, he is keen to continue learning as he works on innovative construction projects at ACS.
In his spare time, Paul likes to go hiking, rock climbing and snowboarding, amongst other outdoor sports. He often spends his holidays backpacking or walking long-distance hiking trails.
Louis Maurice
Graduate Structural Engineer

Louis graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2022 with an MEng in Structural Engineering with Architecture, where he completed his thesis research project on the reuse of structural components in modular housing as a means of embodied carbon reduction.
Louis now joins ACS in a Graduate role to build on his university and previous industry experience, working towards IStructE chartership following the guidance of his senior engineers. He looks forward to working on a range of projects and developing innovative engineering solutions.

I am Emma Corfield, and I am married to Allan, the owner and fellow director of ACS. We have been together for 12 years, and during that time, I have been on the journey to support and help build our business. For the last 16 years, I have worked as a teacher. I am passionate about education and working with both children and adults. That led to coming into working full time for ACS and leaving my teaching post.
I am now the director of Learning and Development within ACS. My role consists of developing Continuous Professional Development within the company and supporting staff on this journey. This will involve creating and delivering a new CPD programme.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my two boys, which usually involves football and karate! I also enjoy being outdoors, especially on the beach, and when I get some time to myself, I love going shopping or socialising with friends.
